These Maldives resorts are leading the charge on sustainability

Editor’s Note — This CNN Travel series is, or was, sponsored by the country it highlights. CNN retains full editorial control over subject matter, reporting and frequency of the articles and videos within the sponsorship, in compliance with our policy.

(CNN) — As the lowest-lying nation in the world — with much of it sitting just a few feet above sea level — the nearly 1,200 Indian Ocean islands scattered across the Maldives’ sun-soaked atolls are famed not just for their magazine-cover- ready beaches and bungalows, but for their increasing vulnerability to rising sea levels.

According to reports from NASAas much as 80% of these islands could be uninhabitable by 2050.
And that’s not the only pressing environmental threat. The island nation’s remote setting and limited refuse facilities — combined with a large influx of tourists (numbering more than 1.7 million annually, pre-pandemic) — has led to improper

Station Casinos new resort in North Las Vegas clears hurdle

Station Casinos cleared a hurdle in its quest to build a new resort in North Las Vegas, as the company shakes up its real estate portfolio.

The North Las Vegas Planning Commission last week approved Station’s plans for a 67-acre hotel-casino at the northwest corner of Losee Road and the 215 Beltway in a hearing that featured pushback against a company that is also tearing down hotels in Southern Nevada.

Station’s newest project would be built in two phases and calls for a total of 600 hotel rooms and more than 75,700 square feet of casino space. It would also feature restaurants, a movie theater, banquet facilities and other amenities, city records show.

The proposed development would provide more than 1,100 construction jobs and, at full buildout, up to 840 permanent full-time jobs, Station representative Rebecca Miltenberger, an attorney with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, told the commission.

The proposal is

A surf resort. In a desert. During a drought. Really, Coachella Valley?

La Quinta, California-Sept. 14, 2022-A new housing development, called Cantera at Coral Mountain goes up near Coral Mountain in La Quinta. A large wave pool / surf park is planned for Coral Mountain in La Quinta, California. Local residents are concerned about the development. (Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times)

Construction on a new housing development, called Cantera at Coral Mountain, is in progress in La Quinta. (Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times)

To the editors: I am among the outraged by your article, “Surfing in the California desert? Developer’s plan sparks outrage over water use, drought.”

Apparently politicians beholden to developers will continue to allow projects like this to proceed until the rest of Southern California looks like the Coachella Valley, a desert with endless golf courses and water-intensive developments. The almighty dollar will continue to rule.

The surf pool in La Quinta is only the most egregious component of this proposed monstrosity. Do we need to be able to surf in the desert, when the state already has some of the best surfing in the world? I hope the developers will have overplayed their hand and someone with the power to stop these kinds of things will finally
