A surf resort. In a desert. During a drought. Really, Coachella Valley?

To the editors: I am among the outraged by your article, “Surfing in the California desert? Developer’s plan sparks outrage over water use, drought.”

Apparently politicians beholden to developers will continue to allow projects like this to proceed until the rest of Southern California looks like the Coachella Valley, a desert with endless golf courses and water-intensive developments. The almighty dollar will continue to rule.

The surf pool in La Quinta is only the most egregious component of this proposed monstrosity. Do we need to be able to surf in the desert, when the state already has some of the best surfing in the world? I hope the developers will have overplayed their hand and someone with the power to stop these kinds of things will finally

Upper Peninsula snowmobile trail closed after resort owner pulls permits

WAKEFIELD, MI— Snowriver Mountain Resort, formerly known as Big Snow, has permanently pulled trail permits on their property.

They recently purchased Blackjack and Indianhead Mountains in Gogebic County.

The change means Snowmobile Trail 2 through Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will no longer connect Gogebic County from east to west.

Snowmobilers will have to take a large detour through Vilas County, WI.

The towns of Bessemer and Ironwood Michigan would no longer be accessible from the east via UP snowmobile trails.

Several Wisconsin towns would also be impacted by the closure.

Snowriver Mountains responded to public outcry via Facebook Wednesday:

“There has been a great amount of commentary and discussion on the meeting that took place over the snowmobile trail through the resort.

The management of Snowriver Mountain Resort, formerly known as Big Snow, appreciates the feedback we’ve received from snowmobilers over the past few days, and we recognize the huge economic

US Resort Claims Second Place

It’s not too early to start planning where you’re going to carve your way through fluffy, powdery snow this winter and a new report from Money shows which resorts around the world people are most interested in skiing at. Bansko, Bulgaria ranked first place on the list, but the second most desirable resort is right here in the US: Aspen!

Nobody will be surprised that Colorado’s famous, glitzy mountain landed so high up on the list. Last year, Aspen also took silver in the Savills Ski Resilience Indexdue to the quality and reliability of snowload as well as resilience to contend with climate change challenges (Zermatt in Switzerland took gold).

Other US resorts did well on this list, with Lake Tahoe taking eighth place, Vail taking 16th and Jackson Hole at 27.

Now, if you’re interested in where US residents are looking to ski and board, the list alters
